History
The Waikiki Beach Chaplaincy was founded on February 8, 1970, according to the providential will of God and under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, who called Bob Turnbull to establish a ministry on the beach at Waikiki. By executive proclamation, Governor John A. Burns conferred upon him the title “The Chaplain of Waikiki Beach.” He served until November 1980, at which time Gene Ozbun assumed his position as President/CEO. Pastor Alex McAngus followed Chaplain Ozbun and served as the ministry’s Chaplain’ until he was taken up to be with the Lord Jesus on May 27, 2021. Pastor David Tipton, often called ‘Waxer,’ is currently serving as the chaplain’s director and president, stewarding the over 50+ year old evangelistic ministry on the beach. Pastor Waxer’s extensive experience in Christian ministry has allowed him to continue the ministry’s further success and growth. The mission remains the same: to ‘proclaim Christ to the Nations by taking the living Gospel to where the people are. This mission fuels the ministry to reach locals and visitors from around the world with the Good News of Salvation on Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki.
